Farmer's Market

The Farmer’s Market will open the season on Tuesday, May 3 at a new location. This year it will be located at Main & Mission (Burnett’s Tire Care lot) from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. The Farmers Market will continue on Tuesday nights through October offering fresh produce, arts & crafts, and homemade goodies galore.
Salsa Night

Celebrate Cinco De Mayo with food, dancing and fun in the Cellar of Hays House on May 6. Lessons by Tiptoz will begin at 6 pm with dinner served at 7:30. The Social Dancing following the meal ends at 11 pm. There is a discount for those who took the previous Salsa class with Tiptoz. To register email tiptozcg@gmail.com. This event is a combined event of Tiptoz and Hays House.
 
City Wide Garage Sale in Dwight

The city of Dwight will be busy on May 14th with City Wide Garage Sales. USD #417 has given the Prairie Heights PTO permission to sell all of the items left in the Elementary School building. This will include daycare items, desks and chairs, office furniture, lunchroom/cafeteria items, folding chairs, maps, shelving, educational items and much more!

Kaw Council Programs

The Kaw Council Educational Programs of the Kaw Mission for 2016 will continue on Sunday afternoon, May 15 at 2 pm. The Kaw Nation Kansas Project Committee will present information on “Allegawaho Park.

"Paper Giants” at the Volland Store

The Volland Store will present their spring exhibit entitled “Paper Giants,” featuring artwork by Ky Anderson, Meg Lipke, and Vicki Sher, through May 29, 2016. The Volland Store is located at 24098 Volland Road, Alma, Kansas. The exhibit will be open noon-5 pm, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of May.

7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The Council Grove Country Club will be the site of the annual Golf Tournament on May 14. Tee times begin at 8 am and 1 pm. Make sure you get there for the free breakfast and lunch. To enter call John at 316-619-0016 or email kem.nicodemus@gmail.com. Profits from the tournament go to support the USD 417 Educational Enhancement Fund.

Santa Fe Trail Monster Fishing Derby

Catch the fishing derby at Andres Pond on May 6, 5 pm. There is a package deal for food, fishing and fun with prizes for the smallest, largest, and the most fish caught. Maybe even for the youngest fisherman present, who knows. Bring your lawn chairs and join in the fun sponsored by the Santa Fe Trail Parish. The Chamber has maps if you need directions to the pond.

Kansas State Historical Society

The Last Chance Store and the Kaw Mission will be the site of the Kansas Archeology Training Program from June 2- 17.  Various opportunities will be available for area residents ranging from the actual digging in the dirt to Architectural Building Survey classes.  There will also be a chance to bring in old photos for scanning and saving as well as a night to bring collections for identification. Start searching your closets and photo albums for your treasures to bring to these events.

Tours in Town

The May tours are early this month. The first tour we have is a group of Gifted Students visiting from south east Kansas. We also have Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins visiting Kansas for the first time. She will tour a local ranch and farm as well as the Kaw Mission and Trail Days Café and Museum. Ending the evening she and her group will eat at the Hays House and enjoy live music from local Kansas artists. There are also a couple of tour groups visiting at the Kaw Mission mid-month but you may see them go through town.
